Short answer: Production for a standard run takes about 5 business days, but the full timeline also includes file review, proof approval, and freight, so plan for roughly two to three weeks by air or about six to eight weeks door to door by ocean.

People often ask how long a job takes, and the honest answer is that it depends on which stage you mean. A printing job is a chain of steps, and only one of them is the press.

The stages

  • File preparation: yours. Allow time to fix bleed, fonts, color, and resolution.
  • File review and proof: after you upload, the files are checked and an E-Proof is generated. Production begins once you approve it and payment is in.
  • Production: printing, binding, finishing, and packing. Most standard runs take about 5 business days; hardcover, very large runs, and some finishes take longer, and the quote shows the figure for your spec.
  • Freight: Air Express and Air Economy about 1 to 2 weeks, and Ocean + Trucking about 35 days. These are estimates.
  • Last-mile delivery: can add a few days, especially for ocean shipments.

Putting it together

For a standard run shipped by air, add file prep, proof approval, about a week of production, and about one to two weeks of air freight: two to three weeks from approved proof to delivery is a reasonable planning range, depending on the carrier. For ocean, add roughly five weeks of freight on top of production, plus trucking, which brings the total to about six to eight weeks.

How to protect your date

  • Work backward from the date you need the books, as in the fall deadline article.
  • Submit clean files the first time; a rejected file costs days.
  • Respond to the E-Proof quickly.
  • If the date is tight, split the order: air for the portion you need first, ocean for the rest.

A physical proof adds time, so decide early whether you need one.

Frequently asked questions

How long is production alone?

About 5 business days for most standard runs. Hardcover, very large runs, and some finishes take longer, and the instant quote shows the exact figure for your spec. Freight time is separate.

Can I speed up delivery?

Ship by air instead of ocean, or split the order so the portion you need first travels by air and the rest by ocean.
