Short answer: A quote is only as accurate as the spec behind it: nine details (binding, trim size, page count, paper, color, cover finish, quantity, extras, and destination) decide the price, and getting them right up front is what keeps the final invoice equal to the first number.
Most price surprises come from a missing detail, not from the printer. Before you ask for a quote, settle these nine items.
The nine details
- Binding: perfect (or PUR), saddle stitch, hardcover, or Wire-O. This sets minimum quantities and the page counts that are allowed. See saddle stitch vs. perfect binding.
- Trim size: width by height of the finished book. Standard sizes are cheaper to plan around; common U.S. trim sizes are a good starting list.
- Page count: inside pages only, in the multiples the binding allows (even numbers for perfect and Wire-O; multiples of 4 for saddle stitch and hardcover).
- Paper: cover and inside stock and weight. Heavier or specialty paper costs more. If you only know pounds, convert with the paper weight chart.
- Color: full color, black only, or black plus a spot color. Black-only interiors are the most economical.
- Cover finish: no finish, matte or gloss lamination, and any foil, spot UV, or embossing.
- Quantity: the real number you need. Ask for two or three quantities side by side, because cost per copy falls as the run grows. See how quantity affects cost.
- Extras: proofs, hole punching, shrink wrap, slipcase, or mailing to several addresses.
- Destination: where the books go and how fast. Freight can be a large part of the total on an overseas order, so price air and ocean both. See air vs. ocean freight.
Make the number hold
- Ask whether the price is locked when you place the order. At Printseoul it is, and the quote shows setup, material, finishing, and proof as separate lines.
- Match the quote to your files. The most common reason a price changes is a file that differs from the spec, such as a different page count or trim size. Check the five file specs before ordering.
- Keep a copy of the spec. The instant quote has a Print estimate button and a link that saves your spec so you can send it to a colleague.
If you are unsure
Start with a standard setup and change one thing at a time to see what moves the price. If your project does not fit the calculator, use Request a Custom Quote and the team replies within one business day.
Frequently asked questions
What do I need to get a book printing quote?
Binding, trim size, page count, cover and inside paper, color, cover finish, quantity, any extras, and the delivery destination. The Printseoul instant quote asks for exactly these.
Why would a printing quote change after I order?
Usually because the files or specification differ from what was quoted, for example a different page count or trim size. At Printseoul the price is locked when the order is placed for the specification you chose.
